Four Steps to Heal Your Relationships and Your ... - The Daily Love

The power of forgiveness is not to be underestimated. Forgiveness can heal relationships, heal a circumstance and even heal the body itself.

In Hawaii and on other islands of the South Pacific, the practice of forgiveness is known as Ho?oponopono.

Ho?oponopono is an ancient tradition that is practiced between members of a family or the members of a community. It is full of rituals and prayers that symbolize the elements of forgiveness. In the tradition of Ho?oponopono, these elements are acknowledgement, gratitude and release.

In China, a similar system of healing exists.

Wang Fengyi, a Confucian scholar, developed his own system of healing at the turn of the 20th century. Like Ho?oponopono, Wang Fengyi found that forgiveness between members of a family or a community led to a deeper form of forgiveness within an individual.

This deep level of forgiveness often corresponds with a physical release. Sometimes, it even means healing a physical disease.

By retelling stories of suffering and forgiveness, Wang Fengyi found that members of a family or of a community were able to acknowledge negative patterns and to embrace their heavenly nature.

Forgiveness is not about accepting blame or accusing others.

There is no victim in forgiveness.

And there is no judgment.

While from different corners of the world, both Ho?oponopono and Wang Fengyi?s Confucian method of healing focus on repairing relationships between family members.

You can also use the principle of forgiveness within your own body.

For example, what kind of relationship do you have with your nervous system? Or your skeletal system? By simply speaking to the cells in your body, you can heal layers of pain, emotional suffering and even outside relationships.

Ho?oponopono and Wang Fengyi?s system of healing both use four steps in the process of forgiveness:

1. Acknowledge the error or belief system that has allowed pain and suffering to exist.

2. Offer gratitude for the message. As painful as the message may be, we can always show gratitude because once we acknowledge something, we have the power to transform it.

3. Feel love emanate from your heart center. Once we realize the delicacy of life, human emotions and the physical body, there is an immense feeling of love.

4. Let go. And say goodbye. When we let go, we cleanse the body of toxic emotions and suffering. Whether the relationship is with your own body or with another person, see the relationship surrounded with light.

New York City health commissioner: scold or lifesaver?

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Critics call him a puritanical scold, Gotham's Dr. No and a nursemaid to Mayor Michael Bloomberg's nanny state. Meet Thomas Farley, New York City's health commissioner.

Farley, a pediatrician and endurance athlete, says they are wrong about his efforts to help New Yorkers eat better, smoke less and exercise more -- moves that have been linked to New York's recent gains in average life expectancy, the biggest gains of any metro area in the country.

"Anybody who is first at doing something is going to get a lot of criticism. And this is New York, this is the way we deal with each other," said Farley, who hopes to roll out two of his most controversial health initiatives this month.

One is a plan to restrict the size of sugary drinks to 16 ounces or less nearly everywhere they are sold, which is expected to be approved soon by the city health board. The other is a push to have hospitals promote breastfeeding by making baby formula less available to new mothers.

Behind the desk in Farley's office in Queens are reminders of the marketing muscle he's up against: eye-catching tobacco products, colorful 23-ounce sugary drinks and a cache of baby formula sent unsolicited to an expectant mother on his staff.

The unquestionably fit Farley shared his height - 6 foot 2 inches - but declined to reveal his weight or age, although he appears to be in his mid-50s. Each day he leaves the Manhattan apartment he shares with his wife, also a pediatrician, and their four daughters for a 4-mile run, a 10-mile bike ride or weight lifting and a swim.

His chief vice is pastries, and he immediately regretted telling a reporter that as a boy in New Jersey he ducked into the woods to smoke cigarettes with friends until he was caught.

Farley graduated with honors from Haverford College. After receiving his medical degree from Tulane University, he spent 11 years with the Louisiana Office of Public Health.

He took the helm in New York in 2009 after Thomas Frieden left to run the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As the head of an agency with 6,000 employees and a $1.6 billion budget, Farley today shoulders what he calls Bloomberg's legacy as "the world's first public health mayor."

Along with his predecessor, Farley is credited with pioneering bans on smoking and trans fats, mandates to reduce salt and post calorie counts, and initiatives that pushed junk food to the back of corner grocery stores.

At the same time, the city has reclaimed streets and created construction incentives to transform bike riding, walking and stair climbing into almost unavoidable exercise.

CRITICS ABOUND

Those efforts are being replicated in cities across the globe -- calories are now printed on menus in Seattle, and in Hanoi smoking is no longer allowed in public places -- even as they come under fire from restaurant groups, food and beverage companies, and small business owners.

Farley brushed off criticism that he's trampling personal freedoms as a gripe from industries motivated by unfounded fears of lost profits.

"We're creating a healthier environment that gives people the freedom to just go about their business without having to worry so much about being vigilant about their health behavior," Farley said.

"He really said that?" asked Andrew Moesel, spokesman for the New York City chapter of the New York State Restaurant Association, which opposes the proposed soda ban. "There have been many times when this administration thinks they know what's best for citizens and that just rubs people the wrong way."

While Farley's approach may bristle, results are cropping up that may shift the conversation.

A study discussed in the June 2012 medical journal Lancet shows New York City far outpaced the rest of the nation in gains in life expectancy. Some success is due to the city preventing and controlling AIDS, but more than 60 percent of the increase in life expectancy since 2000 can be attributed to reductions in heart disease, cancer, diabetes and stroke, the report said.

"A major role was played by the health department, especially the programs and policies to promote healthy living," lead researcher Ali Mokdad, a professor at the University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, told Reuters.

Farley's crusade for a healthier New York has faced setbacks. A tempest swirled in January when an obese actor complained that his photo had been altered to depict him as an amputee in a city advertisement on the dangers of diabetes.

And in July the courts ruled the city could not scare smokers by requiring delis to hang posters of a stroke-damaged brain, a cancerous lung and a rotting tooth.

Farley credited Bloomberg for the health department's success. It also helps to have a city board of health to pass rules that might otherwise get bogged down in a broader state legislature, he said.

"It's very rare for public health agencies around the country to have all those things working in their favor, so we feel obligated, in a way, to make headway here," he said. "Then the rest of the country often follows us."

Commentary: The Risky Business of Valuing IP

COMMENTARY | According to widely circulated news reports, the jurors in Apple v. Samsung ignored the testifying experts and calculated damages on their own. Who can blame them? Apple's expert came up with upwards of $2.5 billion as fair compensation for the infringement. Samsung's expert countered with about $500 million. A $2 billion spread makes it hard to trust either analysis.

Valuing intellectual property is risky business, especially when the stakes are high. Investors, regulators, and tax authorities all want to know what a company's technology is worth. If the company doesn't give a straight answer, it risks costly inquiries and investor skepticism.

Unfortunately, a straight answer is hard to come by. Companies have to value IP for all sorts of reasons. And they have to follow different rules, depending on the purpose of the valuation. What if Apple licenses one of its patents to a foreign subsidiary? What if Samsung buys a company with a patent portfolio equivalent to Apple's? Each of those analyses will likely propose a different value for the technology. And chances are slim that either of those values will bear any resemblance to the numbers exchanged last week.

The rules of the road in IP valuation change according to who's driving. If tax authorities are behind the wheel, only a portion of a company's patents may have any value at all. In M&A, financial regulations tend to steer many companies towards high IP valuations. And, while courts typically rely on lost profits and/or reasonable royalty estimates to approximate patent value, juries may well veer off that road and go four-wheeling instead. Small wonder that valuations of the same IP could differ substantially, depending on the analysis. By billions, say.

Tech companies may be thrill-seekers with respect to innovation, but they're pretty conservative when it comes to stuff like financial reporting, tax returns and investor confidence. These audiences don't appreciate miscalculations or uncertainty. Consequently, IP valuation projects must be carefully managed, whatever their purpose. And, even if a company coordinates its multiple IP analyses and carefully controls dissemination of results, it still runs the risk of defending them against a jury's opinion.

If the blockbuster jury award in Apple v. Samsung survives appeal, it could be a game-changer. Technology companies may think twice about risking patent infringement suits. And a decision to steer clear of the courts may require a new approach to innovation. Specifically:

  • "I'll show you mine if?" Tech companies may find it more prudent to cross-license technology to entwine their interests and avoid costly litigation.
  • "If you can't beat 'em, buy 'em." Less successful innovators may snap up their more creative competitors to access the technology they need. While acquisitions are expensive, they avoid high profile lawsuits and brand-damaging jury verdicts.
  • "Since I can't steal your tech, I'll steal your talent." The talent flow between companies may accelerate as competitors lure each other's best and brightest. Companies may find this strategy a relatively cost-effective way to jump-start innovation and cultivate a robust IP portfolio. Even if employers fight back, the stakes shouldn't be as high as they are in patent suits.

Each of the strategies suggested above represents a more conservative approach to IP portfolio enhancement and would result in more cross-licensing, increased M&A activity, and elevated technology salaries. R&D departments may coordinate more closely with finance groups in this environment as companies greet internally generated innovation with more caution.

Intellectual property portfolios represent the crown jewels of successful technology firms. Protecting them is a matter of corporate survival. Unfortunately, assessing their value is a matter of perspective. Litigation introduces yet another perspective, one that may or may not rely on accepted valuation methodologies.

The Apple v. Samsung case may encourage tech firms to take courts out of the valuation equation altogether, by finding new - litigation-resistant - ways to access intellectual property.

GAYTWOGETHER: Gay Relationships: ?Should We Have Sex Yet ...

Gay Relationships: ?Should We Have Sex Yet? Negotiating Your First Time With Mr. Wonderful? - Part Two ( continued from yesterday?)?

The Sexual Floodgates Are Opening! - So you and Mr. Wonderful are now at the stage where the chemistry is bubbling over and you can?t keep your hands off each other. You?ve gone out at least several times and the compatibility you share seems to be indicating a ?green light.? Before racing off to the bedroom (or other creative carnal lovemaking spot!), ask yourself these questions to avoid getting hurt and to make sure this is the right time for you to get naked:

? Why do we want to have sex now? What are our motives?

? Do I feel physically and emotionally safe with him? Am I able to be vulnerable with him with my body and emotions?

? Do I feel cared about by him? Does he show genuine interest and curiosity about me in other areas of my life other than sex? Does he respond to me non-sexually?

? Am I able to be myself freely around him? Do I feel good about myself when I?m around him? Do I like the man that he is from what I?ve learned about him so far?

? Are we able to communicate openly with each other? Have we each engaged in enough self-disclosure to feel comfortable about each other? Have we been able to express affection to each other thus far?

? Does he demonstrate dependability and loyalty? Do I feel like a priority? Do we have mutual respect and support???

?
Additional Tips Before Taking The Plunge:

? Make sure you?ve talked about your sexual histories and have had discussions about sexually transmitted diseases, safe sex, and beliefs about monogamy vs. nonmonogamy. While this may seem like it?ll take away some of the excitement, it doesn?t necessarily have to do that. Make the discussion part of the ?erotic foreplay? and explore your sexual values, attitudes, preferences, and fantasies together to heighten the intimacy and get to know each other more intensely. Make it part of the ?turn-on? and ?build-up.?

? It may be helpful to communicate to dating prospects something to the effect of ?I?m very attracted to you but I don?t have sex until I really know someone.? A frank, up-front assertive statement such as this will certainly weed out men who potentially match your vision vs. those who don?t. You may get lots of men who ?abandon ship?, but they weren?t meant to be and now lots of time and energy has been saved for you to continue your quest. Remember, it?s quality, not quantity.

? When you?re in the ?waiting phase? and holding off from sex initially, continually create ?allure? and intrigue to keep your guy aware that you?re still interested and find him attractive with respectful flirting. A lot of gay men have been conditioned to equate ?no sex? with rejection and could be sensitive to ?sexual fasting?, so give him lots of ?positive strokes? to keep the spark going without playing games.

? While the argument could be made that having sex right away can help bring to light whether you?re sexually compatible, keep in mind that it all comes down to your personal requirements and what you deem most important. Also remember that sex gets hotter the longer a couple is together (practice makes perfect!) and that sex tends to be more passionate and fulfilling when a foundation of emotional intimacy has already been developed.

? Finally, no matter how much prep-work you?ve laid out to be a successful dater, there will be times when you?ll make a mistake, have a slip of poor judgment, or the other guy will bail for no apparent reason. Be kind to yourself and remember you?re human. Take ownership for where you went wrong and get back on your dating plan. You have no control over how the other guy behaves. Be mindful too that sex is a loaded issue for a lot of people and unresolved intimacy issues is a big culprit for seemingly good dating prospects bolting out of nowhere shortly after a sexual relationship begins. Protect your heart, be patient, and never give up hope that your Mr. Right is out there?the timing just hasn?t been right yet.

Conclusion:? Sex means different things to different men. As a gay man searching for a life partner, introducing sex into a dating relationship takes faith and trust. There is no right time necessarily to be intimate, but realizing that sex and relationships have completely different mindsets with different attitudes and behaviors can better help you decide where and when your sexual first with Mr. Wonderful fits best into the timeline of your vision for a long-term relationship.

Stay true to your values and remember that it?s not a numbers game?it?s about being successful with the right guy..Mr. Right!

Natasha Calis Stars in ?The Possession?

Aug 30, 2012

By: Lynn Barker

13-year-old actress Natasha Calis lives in Vancouver B.C. and has been on TV and in films since age seven but no film has asked as much of her as The Possession (PG-13), a scary movie based on the real story of a box with a demon locked inside that is bought by a girl at a yard sale! Watch what you pick up at one of those!

In Jewish legend a Dibbuk Box often locks away an evil demon that would otherwise possess a young person. A real guy bought one at a yard sale and had lots of weird and bad things happen to him after he opened it. He tried to sell it on E-bay but no takers! He?s still got it locked away. Even the screenwriters of The Possession didn?t want it anywhere near them and neither did the cast. They use a fake one in the film.

Natasha does an amazing job playing a normal teen who becomes scary and evil when a demon takes over.? She admits to being curious about fright films. She watched The Exorcist without her parents? permission at age nine at a sleepover and had nightmares for days.? Working on this film, however, didn?t scare her at all. In fact, she says she had a blast?.except for eating raw meat and getting some moth poo on her. Ewwww!

Kidzworld: Did the fact that this movie is based on a true story scare you and make you want to be in it more?.or less?

  • Natasha: I guess it made me want to do it more because it was pretty cool. It was pretty crazy and interesting to me.

Kidzworld: Kids and teens would want to know if it was ever scary being in a scary movie or is it so technical that you never get freaked out?

  • Natasha: For me it was so much fun that it was not scary at all. If you walked onto the set you would never, in a million years, know that it was a horror movie. We were blessed with such an amazing cast and crew. It was so nice and friendly and a happy atmosphere for me. So the mood was lighter on set.

Kidzworld: At your audition for the role you had to pretend you were already possessed and, as your possessed character Emily, you told the director that there was ?a little old Polish woman? inside you. That wasn?t in the script. Where did that come from? Kinda creepy.

Kidzworld: And they decided to use that in the movie too! Overall, right before an intense scene, do you just listen to music on your i-pod or how do you prepare?

  • Natasha: I get my heartbeat going by running (in place) and I close my eyes and really put myself in the character?s shoes in the moment and I think how I?d be feeling. For this movie, it required a lot emotionally, and the director (Ole Bornedal) would take me aside before each scene and give me a heads up on what I was about to do.

Kidzworld: When you do listen to music, who do you like?

  • Natasha: I love Rihanna and Marinas Trench and I love Fun.

Kidzworld: This movie was very physical for you. You get thrown around. You throw fits. ?Were you in a harness on wires?

  • Natasha: Yeah, I was strapped into a harness and I repelled off the ceiling!? That was so fun!
?

Kidzworld: You do this weird Spider-Man move where you are close to the ground and stick one leg out. Was that your idea or your director?s? It was like if Spider-Man was possessed by an evil spirit.?

  • Natasha: (laughs). He was like ?So for this moment it requires you to get on the ground. Do you have any poses??? So I started experimenting and ended up with that move.

Kidzworld: Your character Emily is a Vegan. Do you love animals like she did?

  • Natasha: I?m not a Vegan but I love animals. I have a dog Benny, he?s a Snoodle, a Schnauzer and Poodle.

Kidzworld: You have a lot of very emotional scenes in the film so which one was the hardest for you?

Kidzworld: When you were little, were you afraid of any mythical characters.. boogeyman etc. ?

  • Natasha: No, I never believed in monsters. I guess I was kind of wise beyond my years when I was little. I wasn?t one to sit down and watch (scary movies). I?d get a cardboard box and pretend it was something. I had a huge imagination but I didn?t believe in monsters.

Kidzworld: When it looks like Emily is eating raw meat, what was that really?

  • Natasha: I?m really eating raw meat. No joke. It was disgusting but I got to spit it out. It was in my teeth. I went into it thinking they wouldn?t (use real raw meat).

Kidzworld: Did you hang out with Madison (Davenport) who plays your older sister? Did you stay in touch?

Kidzworld: Did you keep anything from the movie, like the ring that Emily finds in the Dibbuk box or some of your wardrobe?

  • Natasha: The props person let me keep the ring. ?It?s a beautiful ring. I think it was an old coin. It?s a prop so it doesn?t creep me out.

Kidzworld: Who would you just die to costar with in a film?

  • Natasha: That?s hard. Probably Meryl Streep or Robert DeNiro, some legends like that that I look up to because they are such phenomenal actors.?

Kidzworld: What?s next for you?

  • Natasha: I?ve auditioned for a few things so we?re waiting to hear but meanwhile, I?m going back to regular school.

ShoutEm Launches Development Platform To Make HTML5 Mobile Apps Look Native

ShoutEmWhen ShoutEm was first launched back in 2008, it was focused on helping users to build their own social networking platforms. Well, the world has changed, and since then, it's transitioned the business as a platform that can be used to build mobile applications. But not everyone needs (or wants) a native app -- so ShoutEm now has a way to easily create HTML5 apps that can be viewed in any mobile web browser. With the ShoutEm HTML5 development platform, developers can quickly and easily make mobile web apps that have a lot of the same functionality as native mobile apps. Many businesses are developing native apps already, but for those who don't have an iPhone or Android phone, using HTML5 will allow them to reach a large number of users on feature phones or other smartphone platforms.
