Stress of Caregiver for Ailing Spouse

Spousal Caregiver

Boca Home Care Services works with many families where an aging spouse becomes the caregiver to an ailing one. This can be either to a loved one with a physcal impairment or a cognitive one. Alzheimer?s Demetia is a leading creator of the spousal or family caregiver. The Caregiver Job Description is so stress producing that it is almost certain that a Caregiver has Stress. The ?commandments? to help manage that stress is to take care of yourself, have an outlet, and get HELP. Getting help is so key but often the resistance to getting or accepting help just adds to the stress.? When a friend, family member or neighbor offers a little help- try saying ?Thank you? and take them up on the offer. Consider a Day Care program and certainly explore hiring a caregiver to give yourself respite time off. Hiring? a caregiver can be a short term ?treatment? and be used intermittently.? Remember, if you, the Caregiver collapses, then the family (grown children) have 2 parents in need of care. Most Adult children will prefer to help financially to prevent the greater stresses of both parents ailing. In any case, it is an adult child?s right to offer help or not,?to their mother or father.

We know when we are feeling stressed. Here are?types of caregiver stress (identified by?the Alzheimer?s Association)?which can combine over time to overwhelm and cause health problems?to even the most loving, caring, well meaning and proficient family caregivers. Identify your stress and speak to your family and doctor about it to help find reasonable solutions.

* DENIAL about the disease and how it effects the person disagnosed.

* ANGER at the person, at yourself, the medical community, and of all those around you who don?t understand or don?t want to either.

* SOCIAL WITHDRAWAL from friends and activities once enjoyed.

* ANXIETY about the day to day list of worries,? care responsibilities and the ?what ifs? of the future.

*DEPRESSION causing the feeling of hopelessness and helplessness which lessens your ability to cope and breaks your spirit.

* SLEEPLESSNESS &?EXHAUSTION ?which makes doing routine tasks, let alone enjoyable ones?that much harder and puts your overall health at greater risk.

* IRRITABILITY which leads to loss of patience, moodiness and triggers negative responses or actions.

* LACK of CONCENTRATION which leads to forgetfulness and makes doing?even routine tasks more difficult.

HEALTH PROBLEMS which start taking a toll on your mental and physical well being. This can be both stress related and a sign that you are not tending you your own health needs often enough.

As a family caregiver you probably recognize the entire list and may have more to add. Stress on a structure and on a person builds to a point where something, or someone gives way. Actively find ways which best help you to reduce your stress before it breaks you.
