Patriotic Concert Planned at Church

The annual Moundsville Baptist Church Choir's Patriotic Concert, which takes place the Sunday prior to July 4th, is scheduled for 6 p.m. on July 1.

This year's theme is, "America's Faith, Flag and Freedom."

The event features the church choir, under the direction of Sharon Combs, along with other church members, individuals representing the different branches of the military, the Moundsville Honor Guard, along with church pastors, Rev. J. Thomas Steele and Rev. Ron Price.

This year's concert will include guest singers, a sing-a-long, and a "Mountain Man."

At the conclusion of the concert, pie and ice cream will be served.

The public is invited to attend.

The deadline for returning applications for those wishing to participate in the Marshall County Fair Queen Pageants is July 3. Applications are available on the Marshall County Fair website, which is www.marshallcountyfair.net, by calling 304-281-5790, or at the Marshall County Extension Office on Eastern Fourth Street.

The pageants will be held the evening of July 23 on the Festival Stage at the fairgrounds in Moundsville. The pageants are for contestants ages 7-21.

In addition to these pageants, another will be the Junior King and Queen event for participants ages 4-6. It will be held the afternoon of July 23.

The winners and runners-up in the pageants will actively participate in fair activities throughout Fair Week, which is July 22-28.

This past Wednesday was the beginning of summer, and it was also an opportunity to see the Pittsburgh Pirates, who were playing the Minnesota Twins.

It was six years ago, on June 17, 2006, that I took part in pre-game ceremonies by taking the Pirates lineup card to home plate and handing it to the umpires and meeting the Twins manager Ron Gardenhire, who is still at the helm.

Our group on Wednesday was comprised of members of OPALS (Older People Active Live Style) from Ohio Valley Medical Center, along with some regulars of the Uniglobe Travel Baseball Club, and we made a day of it by also touring PNC Park and the Clemente Museum.

For the majority of those in attendance from this area, this was the first time they had toured PNC Park. The tour, which was conducted by guides Elaine Cosentino and Tom Todd, included sitting in the Pirate dugout, going onto the field, sitting in the press box, and viewing a video of the Pirates clubhouse.

Although it was some six hours prior to the game, several Pirate players were seen arriving in preparation for the contest, including Andrew McCutchen, who stopped to enable Bill Bryson to take his picture.

As to the Clemente Museum, it is an independent non-profit undertaking dedicated to preserving the memory and legacy of the late Pirates star. The collection of memorabilia is wide-ranging and designed to evoke the spirit of Clemente, as well as knowledge of his life.

Ironically, our package included a coupon for a Clemente jersey which we received at the ball park. On the front of jersey is the word Pirates and the number 21, and on the back is also the number 21.

Today wraps up the three-day Moundsville Boys of Summer get-together.

This is an event which enables former youth baseball players of the 1950s and 1960s do a little hitting at the East End Playground where they got their start in organized baseball.

As organizer Jim Heath notes, "back then we didn't have maybe the best of equipment, but we made the best of what we had, and had fun playing.''

Today's event will include a picnic at Riverfront Park in Moundsville.

A reminder: Nomination forms for the John Marshall High School Wall of Fame are to received by July 1.

Forms are available in the main office at John Marshall High School and at the Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library.

Also, if you would like to be a city council candidate in Moundsville, you can file as early as July 2, with the deadline being prior to Aug. 12.

City Clerk Sondra Hewitt announces that forms may be picked up in person at the city clerk's office between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, beginning July 2.

Four seats on council will expire on Dec. 31.

They are: First Ward, a seat currently held by Paul Haynes; Third Ward, a seat currently held by Eugene Saunders; and two councilperson-at-large seats currently held by Dennis Wallace and K. Mark Simms.

Although the residents of Glen Easton refer to their community as downtown and uptown, this past week I did learn of the road/lane and drive addresses of the community.

The main road through Glen Easton, as you might guess, is called Glen Easton Road, while the roadways within the community are Friendly Road, Hilda Lane, Doty Lane, Gravel Lane, Bison Drive, Buffalo Trail Drive, Thorn Drive and Indian Trail Lane.
